I hear people there are re-hanging house numbers Still rattled by the quake and former lovers They’ve even cleaned up the yard and renewed their lease Still there is no sign to tell you you’re on Maria Street Some people still keep a gun hidden behind the closet door In case they come for the Toyo stove, money or even more Just a few houses down a woman shouts it’s time to eat It’s just another day in the black spruce on Maria Street There may be no running water but there’s always gravity There may be plenty of minuses even -33 And the 18-wheelers will remind you not everyone sleeps As if you didn’t already know by the lights on Maria Street Someone’s life changed there with a single phone call You may have brought it all with you but when you leave you can’t take it all And if you listen hard you’ll hear a wind chime left in the trees Playing a few notes of songs from Maria Street

about

This song is a snapshot of a street I used to live on in Fairbanks, Alaska. This song recently resurfaced and I decided to make it a single. It was written and recorded around 6 years ago. I recorded all of the songs for my album, Mercy, as well as this song on Maria Street.
